An excellent reference book to the art of marine navigation, 3 Jul 2000
As a complete novice to sailing and marine navigation, I found this book easy to follow, with useful examples of the principles involved. The book also covers such things as tides, how to read charts and there are also chapters devoted to electronic naviation.

Good but see 2003 edition, 22 Jan 2004
This is an excellent book covering the topics of Charts, Position fixing,Tides and Pilotage very well suited me as an absolute beginner and does well for those with very much more experience and is an excellent aid memoire.Contains lots of tips and worked examples for charting and tide assessment. However a later edition (2003) is just as good and goes into electronics more so I recommend that

Use this book to assist in your DS, CS or YM Theory courses, 2 Feb 2003
I have studied Day skipper, Coastal skipper and Yachtmaster theory courses as distance learning. This book has not quite been a bible during these courses, but it has been an excellent learning aid. I referred back to it on many occasions during the courses and the lay out of the book and the manner in which it is written, makes it very simple to pick up and refer to any section without the need to track back through previous chapters for referenced sections.
