4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for one taking up the Art of Iaido, 19 Sep 1999
By gd7esm@qsl.net (Isle of Man (go on look it up!)) - See all my reviews
As with all the martial arts, one cannot learn from a book; but as an aid to learning with a good instructor, this book is very good. It goes into just enough detail to keep the student's interest, whilst not overburdoning him/her with technicalities, thus allowing the student to make progress. It also goes to great pains to make the student very aware of the dangerous aspect of the Art, and to instil respect for the weapon, and its history. Let's not forget that, unlike most of the other martial arts, the sole purpose of this weapon is to kill!! There are only 3 possible outcomes from a "face-off" between two samurai armed with swords (a) you die (b) he dies (c) you both are so seriously injured that you are still likely to die! (Fujii Okimitsu - Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu)

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer to the art., 18 April 1999

IAI- The Art of Drawing the sword is a great place for someone to start their study of iaido. Punctuated with interesting tidbits of info (though I am at a loss as to why so much space was devoted to sword-testing on corpses and on the proper procedure for seppuku), it explains in simple terms the basic movements and kata. A must have for anyone interested in the practice of the Katana or Daito.
