Amazon.co.uk Review
In the days before computer-generated dinosaurs and toys, kids were far more easily pleased--shaky stop-start animation, 2-D cartoons with no attempt at realism or perspective, and grown men dressed in grey furry suits who rummaged through bins. However, shameless cross-product merchandising was still popular, and the tie-in record ruled the charts. This compilation gathers together all the lost classics from the Wombles' back catalogue, previously only ever available on vinyl. Everyone knows the hits--"The Wombling Song" and "Remember You're A Womble", and hard though it may be to believe today, these furry fellows actually made it to the top of the charts and even appeared on
Top Of The Pops in their heyday. However, it's the rare gems that have made it to this compilation that make it essential listening--their James Bond tribute "From Wimbledon With Love", their country & western styling on "Nashville Wombles" and the truly awesome prog rock epic that is "The Myths and Legends of King Merton Womble and His Journey To The Centre of the Earth", complete with choirs, triumphant horns and thunderous cymbal clashes.
The Wombles' Svengali Mike Batt, remains the driving force behind the entire compilation, taking his hirsute protigis through almost every type of music imaginable--blues, country, folk, barbershop harmonies, space rock, military brass and classical--while simultaneously managing to maintain a pop sensibility and childlike innocence throughout. This is the album's real joy, the fact that it has the ability to transport you back to the innocence of youth with just a few parping brass chords. So, put your grey, furry suit on and start singing. Altogether now: "Underground, overground, Wombling free, the Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we." --Helen Marquis
