Christmas Eve in the opulent spendour of Renaissance Venice, 17 Nov 2001

Another gem from the Gabrieli Consort & Players, A VENETIAN CHRISTMAS plunges us once again into the magical atmosphere of Renaissance Venice. Sensitively conducted by Paul McCreesh, this CD is a recording of a Christmas Eve mass just as it may have been celebrated in St Mark's at the end of the 16th Century. As in his recording of A VENETIAN CORONATION, McCreesh successfully captures the atmosphere of splendour and opulence of 16th Century Venice. However, in A VENETIAN CHRISTMAS the tone is softer and more mysterious, to reflect religious fervour, as well as unwavering mystical faith. The Gabrieli Consort sing the mass with controlled precision blended with inspiration. The original instruments of the Players give the piece that slightly imperfect, authentic period sound. A VENETIAN CHRISTMAS brings together music by the Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli and the less known Cipriano de Rore. The combination is seemless, producing an impeccable Christmas Eve mass. A VENETIAN CHRISTMAS transports you to the gold mosaics and Byzantine domes of St Mark's, wrapping you in a haunting Renaissance Christmas atmosphere.
